Printing Data

PRINTING the data and calculations is accomplished through one of two means:

1. On the Palm platform, printing is accomplished by clicking the ' IR PRINT ' button on the IOP TARGET screen. All data input on the first four screens of the program (RISK FACTORS, MED SCREENING, IOP CORRECTION, and IOP TARGET) will be gathered and, after a moment or so, beamed from the infrared port.

To better use this feature, it is necessary to explain more about how the software works. A 3rd party shareware product, called SCS Print Server by Stevens Creek Software (www.stevenscreek.com) is needed as an intermediary to send the data to the infrared port. SCS Print Server is one of the files (SCSPrint.prc) that was loaded onto your Palm during installation of EyeOP. You will be able to print using this software until it expires after so many days or printouts; if you find printing useful, and want to continue with it, you must pay the registration fee of $19.95 to Stevens Creek through their website order form.

SCS Print can be opened as a separate program by clicking on its icon in the Palm's main menu (not EyeOP's menu). The program's parameter's can be set for printer type, etc. and test printing can be done as well. SCS Print is registered by clicking on ' *Unlicensed* ' and entering the registration number you receive from them.

A printer with an infrared port is needed to receive the signal from the Palm. Many late model laser printers have an infrared receiver, and yours may too without you ever having realized it.

A list of compatible printers is listed here
, and adapters are available to add to existing printers. The adapters fit "in-line," with one end attaching to the printer cable input and the other to the printer cable. The following
is from the Stevens Creek site:

Infrared-to-parallel conversion: There are several devices on the market which are "IR-to-parallel" adapters, which essentially convert any printer into an IrDA printer. This is the perfect solution for the office environment, where you have one printer serving multiple Palm users. Just attach one of these to your printer, and everyone of them can print using IR to the printer, while at the same time the pass-through port allows the existing parallel connection to continue. These devices are more expensive than the serial-to-parallel adapters, but since they can be shared by multiple Palm users, they may be more cost-effective in an office environment which essentially add an infrared (IrDA) port to your printer by attaching to the existing parallel port. Unlike the serial to parallel printer adapter cables, infrared to parallel adapters seem to work on all parallel printers, regardless of whether they are "bidirectional" parallel printers or not. We have tested the following:

·ACT-IR100M from Actisys Corporation (http://www.actisys.com/actir100.html)
·JetEye (ESI9580) from Extended Systems
·ExtendNet 100s Print Server from Extended Systems
·Psion Infrared Printer Adapter

Of these, the Psion is battery powered making it fully mobile (but of course this provides the disadvantage that the batteries may go dead without you realizing it); the others come with AC adapters and must be plugged in. The Actisys has the advantage of having a "pass through" port so that a computer can remain connected to the parallel port at the same time; the Psion replaces the printer connection.

2. On the Pocket PC platform, printing must be done indirectly unless you already have a separate program on the Pocket PC that does printing (e.g. via Blue tooth). The data must be first saved by clicking the ' to MEMO ' button on the IOP TARGET screen. All data input on the first four screens of the program (RISK FACTORS, MED SCREENING, IOP CORRECTION, and IOP TARGET) will be gathered and, after a moment or so, saved to a text file that is stored in the root directory of the PDA (usually, root directory is ' /My Device '). The file will be named as EyeOPdataX.txt, where X is a sequential number so that you will not overwrite previous files, e.g. . EyeOPdata1.txt, EyeOPdata2.txt, EyeOPdata3.txt, etc. After synching to a desktop computer, drag the file to the desktop and open with any word processor to print. Hopefully, in future versions, a intermediate printing application will be available as for the Palm.
